Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything”

Plato

It is such a great pleasure to welcome our dear friend Virginia Georgiou to “Jack and Dr Betty” blog. Today, 21st June 2020 is a very special day. It is the World Music Day, and also Virginia’s birthday!

Time for Jack who loves music and is learning how to play the piano, to sing Happy Birthday! So, put up your favorite music, relax and enjoy reading!

The World Music Day began in 1982 in Paris at the initiative of the then Minister of Minister, Jacques Lang. Since then it has spread across Europe and is now celebrated in many countries in a variety of ways.

Cultural festivals and amateur events flood the squares and parks in every corner of Europe with the aim of sharing sounds from over the world, spread music tradition and bring music closer to everyone.

Is there anyone who doesn’t love music? Music is a powerful art and one of the first art forms we come in contact with as children.

Published studies show that children not only love music, but that music contributes in many ways to their psychosocial development. You will have noticed how all the children naturally like the music, the rhythm, the songs, without necessarily having any inclination or talent in it later.

Research in educational and developmental psychology highlights that the benefits of music to a child are so great that no doubt all children should be involved in music from an early age, whether this involves learning an instrument or simply engaging in it through singing.

Here are some of the top ten reasons why a child should be involved in music:

Emotion Expression: Children do not yet know how to express their emotions or thoughts. Through a melody and a rhythm a child can express feelings and feel happier. Music also seems to be extremely beneficial for the expression of emotion in children with learning difficulties.

Socialization: Music cultivates the child’s imagination and fosters creativity, which results to better social interactions. The child can have smoother integration into teams and groups and seeks bonding with other children.

Self-discipline and Self-confidence: Learning a musical instrument or the child’s participation in choirs, teaches the child the virtues of discipline, consistency and at the same time the enjoyment of the result that results from them. In addition, the child’s self-confidence is stimulated when he performs well individually or in groups, especially when they are applauded and rewarded.

Improving memory and Concentration: Storing lyrics and melodies sharpens a child’s thinking so that his mental functions improve and his performance in sports or competitions is higher (in relation to children who are not involved in music). In addition, the child can better concentrate in the classroom or other activities, organize his thoughts and increase the range of his knowledge comfortably and easily.

When children listen to music, they automatically want to reproduce the rhythm and move or dance. Engaging in music and learning an instrument of their choice is a great way to learn to develop fine motor skills and coordinate body movements.

Music has had, still has and will always have a dominant place in children’s lives. It is good to encourage music without imposing it, with the sole purpose of receiving its benefits, to have the opportunity to love it and to resort to it as a balm for the soul in both childhood and adulthood.

Let’s seize the opportunity that World Music Day gives us to nurture the mental world of our children with as much music as we can. Let’s explore music from other cultures, other countries and give our children the opportunity to get in touch with the wonderful world of music and enjoy its benefits.

did, the web shall be much more helpful than ever before.
