There’s something special about Zakynthos — an island that makes both grown-ups and kids feel like summer has no end. For me and the boys, this Greek escape was all about barefoot freedom, salt-soaked smiles, and unforgettable little moments.
Here’s our guide to Zakynthos with children — especially if you travel with your kids solo – written between beach walks, gelato stops, and early-morning runs by the sea.
1. No Shoes Needed: Beachfront Bliss in Laganas

We stayed at Gardelli Resort, a lovely hotel right on the beach of Laganas — and from the moment we arrived, the sandals came off and didn’t go back on until we left.
The beach was quite literally at our doorstep. Mornings began with a barefoot dash to the water, and evenings ended with sandy toes and sleepy grins. But what really made our stay special was the people.
🌞 Kostis greeted us every morning with a warm smile and helpful tips.
🌞 Samuel, all the way from Kenya, was full of kindness and charm — he made our kids laugh every day.
🌞Rachel from Kenya with her genuine smile would always care for us. She was so caring and lovely.
🌞 And Antonis from Peloponnesus, always ready to help, felt like an old friend by the time we left.
All very helpful and caring with the children. A very mother-children friendly environment with great food, amazing swimming pools and by the beach!
2. Boat Trips & Turtle Encounters
One of the highlights of our trip? A boat tour straight from the beach.
We met Nikos, our skipper, who was calm, kind, and wonderfully attentive with the children. He made sure we were safe — but also thrilled by what we saw: sea caves, secret beaches, and the unforgettable sight of a Kareta-Kareta turtle gliding through the clear blue waters.
🌊 No booking apps needed. Just wander down to the shore — someone like Nikos is waiting to take you on a real adventure.

3. Running Free — and Feeling Safe
Zakynthos gave me something rare as a mother and a runner: freedom coming from safety.
It felt completely safe to run from dawn until late evening. The island buzzes with life, but never feels overwhelming. There’s a sense of care here, especially toward families and women. That kind of safety? It’s worth gold.
4. A Little City Magic: Exploring Zante Town
The city of Zante (Zakynthos Town) was a pleasant surprise. The port is vibrant and full of character, and we loved walking through the streets in the late afternoon light. The port is beautiful and Bohali Castle is a MUST visit, offering a perfect spot for sunsets, photos, and a short historical walk.

We also visited the Solomos and Kalvos Museum in Zakynthos Town is dedicated to national poets Dionysios Solomos and Andreas Kalvos. It houses their mausoleums, personal items, manuscripts, and exhibits about the island’s literary and cultural history. Dionysios Solomos (1798–1857) was a Greek poet born in Zakynthos and is considered the national poet of Greece. He is best known for writing the poem “Ύμνος εις την Ελευθερίαν” (Hymn to Liberty) in 1823, inspired by the Greek War of Independence. Andreas Kalvos (1792–1869) was a prominent Greek poet of the Romantic era, known for blending classical Greek ideals with themes of freedom and patriotism. it was great and emotional introducing them to my children.
🍣 For a treat, head up to a roof terrace sushi bar , opposite the museum for great views and even better cocktails. (non-alcoholic fruit punch for the kids, of course).
5. Waterpark Joy — and Being a Kid Again
Sometimes, you just need to let loose — and Zakynthos Water Village is the perfect place.
From wild water slides to lazy rivers, we all found our inner child again. Jack couldn’t stop smiling, and even Betty said, “This is the best day ever!” And honestly? She might’ve been right.
6. Swimming in Crystalline Waters
Every swim in Zakynthos felt like a postcard. The water is crystal clear, gentle, and inviting — perfect for young swimmers and tired parents alike. There’s something magical about looking down and seeing your toes even in the deeper parts.

Final Thought:
Zakynthos is more than beautiful — it’s welcoming, easy, and full of surprises.
You don’t need fancy plans. Just a towel, lots of sunscreen, and a sense of play.
Let your kids run. Let your feet stay bare. Watch turtles glide. And remember — the best memories often come when you let go.
From Jack, Dr Betty, and all of us — Efcharistó Zakynthos!
